Day Six – At Sea Again!

After yesterday’s disappointing weather it was a pleasure to wake up this morning in glorious sunshine, the clocks went forward again last night so now we are 2 hours ahead of the UK. Following last night’s meal we were both still rather full so a light breakfast was the order of the day. We decided to get a little early morning sun along with many other passengers.004

At lunchtime we joined up with our Irish chums for the quiz – A DISASTER!!! only 13 points and our lead is now almost certainly lost. We’ll get to know the position on the next sea day which is next Friday. However we changed our team name [from Village People to 5 Tubes and a Smartie] for a game of “Scattergories” , for which we were victorious! A P&O photo frame is on the way to Margam. We decided to continue this winning streak with a game of Killer Darts – the streak then ended!012

Having talked a lot about the food on board the Azura, I thought it was time to discuss drinks. P&O have to my mind a very grown up attitude to alcohol as you allowed to bring your own onboard if you wish. A practice that has not been tolerated on other ships we have been on. If you do not bring you own the drinks prices on board are very reasonable as I will illustrate later. There are a number of different bars throughout the ship the one above is “The Malabar”, made out as an oasis. While “Brodies” below is a traditional British pub, with pool, darts and it even showed the FA Cup Final today.022

As “Azura” is a British ship it has a good selection of the beers and spirits you would find at home, including draught lager [£2.95 a pint], Boddingtons [£2.70 a pint] and Ciders [Magners £3.95 & Strongbow £2.50 per 440ml]. Bottled lagers range from Fosters[330ml at £2.25] to Corona [at 2.90]. Spirit drinkers are not neglected with whiskies from £2.20 [Bells etc.] to £2.65 [for Glen Fiddich], while Gin,Vodka and Rum start from £2.10, all for a 25ml measure. Soft drinks such as Coca-Cola are £1.60 for a large glass and if you are feeling adventurous cocktail prices range from £3.45 to £4.30. With neither of us being drinkers I don’t know how these prices compare but I am lead to believe they are very competitive.021

For those of you who enjoy wine this ship offers a real treat, the Glass House, a wine bar developed in conjunction with Olly Smith, the TV wine expert. There are 32 premium wines available to sample by the glass thanks to an Enomatic serving system. This state of the art system dispenses wine directly from the bottle utilising a method of inert gas preservation, each glass tasting as if the bottle has just been opened.019

You can also try  wines with three 125ml wine flights in a selection of red, whites or rose. They also serve food, we will probably try this before the end of the cruise. As the sun set we once again took advantage of the balcony.035

And finally, Rosemary, there is a spell checker but it doesn’t work on people’s names, once a teacher always a teacher!!!

  2. I hear about the wine system a few years ago. I think they use it in vegas. From a gadget point of view it's very interesting. I think they use Argon??
Seems a shame the the food is free and you have to pay for the drinks.
Maybe you should get an iPhone to help with the quiz. There's an app for that :)
