After yesterday’s events what was needed was a chance to relax and explore the many sights around the resort of Fort Lauderdale. Sylvia woke early and eventually managed to stir me about 7.30 and together with Win & Jim we set out to hunt for breakfast. A simple task in America , or so we thought. I had noticed a place via the internet that was just behind our hotel and Jim having had a chance to explore the previous evening was keen to look at a bakery in the near-by Hilton hotel. We looked at both but were impressed by neither so returned to the main road to explore further. After a couple of blocks having no success we returned to our hotel and eat there. We were not disappointed.
After the meal we explored the other facilities in the hotel including the pool and spa area. As the morning progressed and the sun got hotter this area slowly filled up, especially those parts sheltered from the strong winds coming off the ocean. Sylvia took in some of the sunshine from our balcony.
After stocking up with some provisions from a local supermarket we returned to our room where Sylvia caught up on some lost sleep while I wrote the first blog entry. Win & Jim had decided to try out the Sun Trolley, a low cost bus service that links the various parts of the city, but Sylvia and I wanted a trip on the Water Taxi.
Fort Lauderdale is built upon a series of man-made islands recovered from the swamps that historically covered the area. The water taxi therefore provides the perfect way to get around and discover the sights of the city. To get to the first stop required a good walk past the city beaches where the “Spring Break” was in full progress with standing room only in certain places.
We were shortly in our seats on the boat…..
….ready to see the multi- million dollar waterside properties….
…with the equally expensive yachts moored outside.
We also had a chance to see some wildlife such as this Iguana.
In total the whole trip took about three hours finally ending up at the up-market shopping area of Las Olas Boulevard, a mixture of shops, galleries and many different restaurants.
Back to the hotel for a spot of dinner before retiring early to catch up on the lost sleep. Tomorrow Win, Jim and I are off for a full day trip to the Everglades while Sylvia is staying local and perhaps dong a little painting.
