Day 5 - Flam.

I thought that it would be difficult to match the spectacular views as we sailed into Olden yesterday, but the sail into Flam not only matched it but probably beat it.

As the ship turned 180 degrees to approach its berth we took in the sun on the main deck.

The village of Flam is even smaller than Olden with a population of only around 450 but it is much more geared up for the tourist trade, with shops, cafes and a museum all readily availiable at the dockside.

We had an afternoon trip booked from the ship so used the morning to explore the town and to take a walk in a park that rose from the fjord. This picture of the ship gives an idea of how high the mountains in the background are.

The sun shone all day with temperatures in the mid-teens for our afternoon trip which started with a boat trip down the Naeroyfjord, a UNESCO heritage site. I’m not sure that the photos do the scenery justice because it was stunning….

…including many waterfalls flowing from the top of the cliffs.

The boat docked at the end of the fjord and we transferred to a coach for the journey to the Stalheim hotel for a welcomed cup of coffee and cake. This was one of the first tourist parts of Norway with Thomas Cook bringing some of his first clients here. The views from the hotel were again stunning (and I’m not referring to the shorts)….

….and just to prove that Sylvia was with me.

The journey back to Flam took us down the steepest road in Norway and through two long tunnels, the longest being six miles long.

Tonight we sail north to the town of Andalnes, home of the Trolls.
