Day Five - Rambling up Las Rambla.

The beautiful sunrise that greeted us as we arrived into Barcelona heralded the start of a gloriously hot day.

This was the third time that we had visited this port on a cruise so decided to have a leisurely walk up Barcelona’s iconic thoroughfare , Las Rambla.

On our last visit we met up with our old friends Jane and Chris and visited the cathedral so on this occassion we thought a visit to the Picasso Museum would be ideal. Walking through the narrow streets that radiate from Las Rambla you come across some amazing architecture such as these highly decorated buildings.

The museum is located at the end of yet another narrow walkway….

….but when we reached it the queue was horrendously long. We decided on a slight change of plan and instead visited the near-by European Museum of Modern Art. Housed in an Eighteenth century palace the museum features many contempary paintings and sculptures some of which were very thought provoking. Not quite Picasso but not a bad way to spend an hour or so.

As the ship sailed from Barcelona P&O laid on one of their typical sail-away parties, with the entertainment team leading the assembled passengers in song and dance. It may be a little cheesy but it’s now very much custom and practice.

This evening Sylvia and I attended The Limelight Club, an on-board venue that recreates the style of an old supper club. For a small addition charge we were treated to a three course meal together with entertainment provided by Madeline Bell. For those too young to remember she was a famous session singer from the sixties backing such artists as Dusty Springfield and performing on hits from The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. Perhaps though she is most famous for the hit “Melting Pot” with Blue Mink which reached the top five in 1969/70. Tonight she sang solo with just a piano backing.

She came around the tables to meet all the audience …...

… a throughly good evening on both the food and entertainment fronts. Thank-you Helena and Diarra for the Christmas present: this is what it went on. Tonight we head for Monte Carlo.

Just in case you were wondering they still haven’t finished La Sagrada Famila!!!
