Star Princess - Day 1.

The poor weather that we experienced in Vancouver was caused by a deep depression sitting off the coast. Last night and today we sailed into that very depression. High winds and a swell on the sea of some 10-12 feet made walking over the deck a little uncomfortable and forced the closure of the swimming pools due to their resemblance to surfing simulators. Despite this we spent a very enjoyable morning, starting with a refreshing game of table tennis. The tables on the Star Princess are located within the covered pool area and so even with the high winds a decent game was possible.

Morning trivia was next on he agenda and with no sunshine outside it seemed that most of the passengers were gathered for this event. It was therefore even more enjoyable to be crowned winners and recipients of shiny new Princess Cruises lanyards. (The afternoon trivia was not as successful being beaten by two points, but still a great effort in what was a very American-centric quiz).

The entertainment package on the ship seems to be a cut above that we have recently experienced with a talk by Grammy and Oscar nominated songwriter Allan Rich kicking off the afternoon. An interesting hour of showbiz tails topped off by performances from the show cast of some of his more famous songs. Tomorrow he is running a song writing workshop which may be interesting.

While I took in this lecture Sylvia stayed in the cabin to try out her water colour pencils on a sketch of Vancouver, the result of which is shown below.

Meanwhile in the atrium a trio of piano and strings played a selection of classical and popular favourites from such composers as Grieg, Joplin and Lennon/McCartney. Something a little different but very well received.

This evening was the first formal night on board. Only Oliver, Victoria and family decided to dress up and after having some official photos taken discovered that there was an hour wait in the restaurant. They therefore joined the rest of the party in the buffet wher Oliver had a main course, several puddings and then finished the meal with a very formal burger.
